Lynn Thompson

Lynn Thompson, 66, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, surrounded by his family at his home in Duncanville after a brief battle with cancer.

Mr. Thompson was born on Dec. 3, 1942, in Corsicana to Floyd and Edna Thompson. He was the youngest of three, known for his streak of stubborn independence. And according to his sister was, in fact, “Mama's favorite.” In 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Nikki McCollum, after sweeping her off her feet in his snow cone truck; later moving her to Dallas. In 1965, he joined the United States Air Force during which time he had his first child, Stacey, in 1967. When his service was honorably completed in 1969, he moved back to Dallas, with his young family; completing it in 1972, with the birth of his son, Ronald.

Mr. Thompson finally settled in Duncanville in 1975, where he eventually retired and garnered the reputation as Defender of the Neighborhood against stray dogs, illegally parked cars, and all things untoward on Katherine Court. Retaining his reputation for stubborn independence, he was also known to soften when showing his devotion to his family and beloved pets. He is warmly remembered for his uncanny ability to fix all things mechanical, his meticulous yard, and canning some pretty mean jellies.

He is survived by his wife, Nikki McCollum-Thompson of Duncanville; his daughter, Stacey Thompson of Dallas; his son, Ronald Thompson of Duncanville; and his sister, Elizabeth Sullivan of Houston. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and many friends who will dearly miss him.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2009, at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home.

Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, 2009, at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery with Bro. Bill Honea officiating.
